Product Search Tips
2 min read
When using “Specific Products” mode, efficient searching helps you find and select products quickly. This guide covers search techniques and tips for managing large product selections.
Search Methods #
Search by Product Name #
The most common search method. Type any part of the product name.
Examples:
- Type “blue” to find “Blue Cotton T-Shirt”, “Navy Blue Jeans”
- Type “cotton” to find “Cotton T-Shirt”, “100% Cotton Sweater”
- Type “shirt” to find all shirt products
Tips:
- Search is case-insensitive (“Blue” = “blue” = “BLUE”)
- Partial matches work (searching “cott” finds “Cotton”)
- Multiple words narrow results (“blue cotton” finds products with both words)
Search by SKU #
Search using product Stock Keeping Unit codes.
Examples:
- Type “SKU123” to find that exact product
- Type “SKU1” to find “SKU100”, “SKU123”, “SKU199”
Tips:
- SKU search is case-insensitive
- Partial SKU matching supported
- Great when you have a list of SKUs to discount
Search by Product ID #
Every WooCommerce product has a unique numeric ID.
How to Find Product ID:
- In Products list: hover over product, check URL (post=123)
- In product edit page: check URL
- In order details: product IDs shown
When to Use:
- You have a list of specific IDs
- Importing from another system
- Programmatic selection
Search Results #
What’s Displayed #
Each search result shows:
| Element | Description |
|---|---|
| Thumbnail | Product image (or placeholder) |
| Name | Full product name |
| SKU | Product SKU if set |
| Price | Current regular price |
| Stock | In stock / Out of stock indicator |
Result Limits #
- Maximum 20 results shown per search
- Refine search if you don’t see your product
- More specific queries = better results
Filtering Before Search #
Category Pre-Filter #
Before searching, select categories to narrow your product pool:
- In the Categories card, select relevant categories
- Search only shows products from those categories
- Faster to find products in large catalogs
Example:
- You have 5,000 products
- Select “Shoes” category (200 products)
- Search now only queries 200 products
- Searching “running” quickly finds “Running Shoes”
Managing Selections #
Adding Products #
- Click product in search results to add
- Product appears in selection area below
- Search box clears for next search
Removing Products #
- Click X on the product tag to remove
- Or search and click the selected product again to toggle off
Bulk Selection Tips #
When selecting many products:
- Use Categories: Pre-filter to reduce search pool
- Search Patterns: Search common terms to find related products
- SKU Ranges: If SKUs are sequential, search partial SKU
- Consider Alternatives: For 50+ products, consider “All Products” with filters
Search Troubleshooting #
Product Not Found #
If you can’t find a product:
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| Product is draft | Publish the product first |
| Product is private | Make product public |
| Wrong category filter | Clear category filters and retry |
| Typo in search | Check spelling, try partial name |
| External product | External/affiliate products aren’t selectable |
Too Many Results #
If results are cluttered:
- Add more words to search query
- Pre-filter by category
- Search by SKU instead of name
Too Few Results #
If results are limited:
- Use fewer/shorter search terms
- Remove category filters
- Try alternative product name
Best Practices #
For Small Selections (1-10 products) #
- Direct search by name works well
- No need for category pre-filtering
- Quick to select individually
For Medium Selections (10-50 products) #
- Pre-filter by category
- Use common term searches
- Consider grouping by product type
For Large Selections (50+ products) #
- Consider “All Products” with category filter
- Or use Smart Selection (Pro)
- Or use Advanced Conditions (Pro)
- Manual selection becomes impractical at scale
Keyboard Navigation #
| Key | Action |
|---|---|
| Type | Start searching in focused search box |
| Arrow Down | Navigate to next search result |
| Arrow Up | Navigate to previous search result |
| Enter | Select highlighted result |
| Escape | Clear search results dropdown |
Variable Products #
Parent vs. Variations #
- Search finds parent variable products
- Selecting parent includes all variations
- Individual variations cannot be selected separately
Example #
Product: “T-Shirt” (variable with S, M, L, XL)
- Search “T-Shirt” finds the parent product
- Selecting it applies discount to all size variations
- You cannot discount only size “M”
Search Performance #
For optimal search speed:
- Type at least 2-3 characters before searching
- Use category filters to reduce search scope
- Specific searches are faster than broad ones
- Search indexes product name, SKU, and ID
